Bob Mintzer Big Band I HEAR A RHAPSODY
Recorded by my father on his VHS camera back in late 1983 at Seventh Avenue South, Bob's arrangement of "I Hear a Rhapsody" features Michael Brecker, Lew Soloff and Don Grolnick, plus an incredible big band with David Sanborn, Pete Yellin, Lawrence Feldman, Roger Rosenberg, Randy Brecker, Marvin Stamm, Laurie Frink, Dave Bargeron, Keith O'Quinn, Bob Smith, Dave Taylor, Frankie Malabe and Will Lee (I'm playing drums) ...

Peter's ECM Trio 1st album session
Переглядів 3,8 тис.Місяць тому
A rare behind-the-scenes video look at an ECM recording session, this one taking place in July of 1992 for the making of the album "You Never Know," the first of 4 albums the trio would make. With the recent passing of Palle Danielsson, I thought it appropriate to share some of this with those of you who listen to these albums. Filmed inside of Rainbow Studio in Oslo, Norway. RIP John Taylor, J...

Peter plays the drum, age 4

Here's audio that was recorded when I was 4 years old, playing on a tom-tom and a cymbal along to a David Carroll recording of "Dancing Tambourine." This was before I had taken a lesson or knew how to hold a pair of drumsticks ... but I *did* know that I wanted to be a drummer (and, as you can hear at 1:05 or so into the track, I wanted to play it "any way I want." Some things never change.

"Design" was a band created by bassist, singer/songwriter Christopher Brown who was an orchestral bass major at the University of Michigan, and Chris chose Peter Bankoff, Alan Pasqua and myself from Indiana University to join him ... Michael Dudash joined the fun on guitar and vocals, in addition to Rick Jacobi on guitar and Mark Hood as our engineer. We made this recording in February of 1972 ...

WINTER WONDERLAND IAA Percussion Ensemble 1970
Переглядів 4563 роки тому
50 years ago, the girls and boys in the percussion department at the Interlochen Arts Academy rolled marimbas, vibes, chimes and bells across the snowy grounds of the school to the cafeteria, where we played Christmas music during dinner. My arrangement of "Winter Wonderland" was captured on a Sony portable cassette machine, and I combined the audio with some images of winter's magic from such ...
DRUM stop motion movie

This is a combination stop-motion and live-action film that I made in 1971 for film class at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Special thanks to my teacher Carol Eilber (RIP). Thanks, too, to Woodrow "Woody" English, then the first trumpet player in the "Studio Orchestra" jazz band, later to become the master bugler and principal trumpeter of the U.S. Army Band (Pershing's Own) ... I realized that ...
Fade (student film by Peter Erskine)

This was a project for a film class I took at the Interlochen Arts Academy when I was 16 years old. Carol Eilber was the teacher of the class; the jazz band ("Studio Orchestra") director, Dave Sporny, agreed to be the snowbound subject of the film, sharing the starring role with a cheeseburger from the cafeteria. It's a silly little movie but it brings back good memories of late winters at the ...

Your father did a great job filming this historic performance!
Incredible… Palle was one my favorite bassists ever. This music is so inspiring and humbling… and what a sound, what a chemistry, at the highest level of artistry… Bravo Maestro Peter! And Palle and John.
I had the pleasure of seeing this trio on tour in the UK during the 1990s. Later in the 2000s I saw John's trio with Palle and Martin France-all wonderful memories. Thank you Peter for this thoughtful upload-god bless you.
Thank you very much Peter, your trio with late John and Palle is one of my two favourite trios in ECM catalogue (you can be compared only with Keith Jarrett's trio in my opinion). I could listen to all your records endlessly!
Thanks,Peter
Wonderfull to watch and hear. I was lucky enough to be in the studio with Jan-Erik, Manfred and Terje Rypdal doing the downmix of "Skywards", which I commissioned in 96-97. It was a revelation to to see JEK work. Magician. Thanks again. Great audio by the way.
Wow, amazing level of mastery, pure magic! Thanks Peter for sharing this video.
That was wonderful. Thanks for posting.
Amazing! Thank thank you so much!
As real as it gets, what a time to be in NYC. Please post more Peter!!
Wow! Legends all! Thanks Peter!!!
🙏❤️
Thank you! There are quite a few of us who are huge fans of the gorgeous trio records you gentlemen made. John Taylor is just magnificent! It was such a loss for music when John and Palle passed... (I love the recordings with Alan Pasqua also!)
Much Thanks, Peter!!!! I feel like these players have accompanied my entire life. Will Lee so young. All Star trumpet section! I'm 69yo and have loved all these players for decades!!!!
Thank you for posting this! I loved this trio, such a unique gathering of musical personalities. I wrote to John Taylor to ask for a lead sheet to Ambleside (after hearing it on your CD). He sent me a copy- such a generous gesture. It is fascinating to watch you three work- these two fine men will be remembered. Thank you.
Wow, one for the history books in jazz! The space you guys used was so human! Please keep sharing…🙏
The original “Horn Man Big Band” line up - that’s how you say bad-ass MFs with a NY accent! Years later, when they recorded IHAR on DMP, the sax solo was Roger Rosenberg on bari.
Lovely Peter, thanks!
I heard about this band from Mintzer but never heard it. Wow!!
Thanks for sharing. An amazing band. Many of my heroes.
Your recent article about the Bass Desires’ sessions was fascinating please write more about your life.
Who’s going to bring up that ridiculous Mike Brecker solo- jeezus. And look at Sanborn’s reaction afterwards. The cats in their prime. Thanks for sharing, Peter! And yeah how about Will swangin’?
Thanks Peter for sharing this wonderful video of your 1992 ECM session. Great music & memories! Deeply saddened to hear of Palle Danilesson’s recent passing, RIP. He was an outstanding bassist and a dear friend back in the early 1980’s, when we did several European tours together; as a duo, and several other trio tours with various drummers. Palle composed & played this beautiful solo on our 1982 “Live” album ua-cam.com/video/KPkbGQ0BJ6M/v-deo.html He had the most amazing perfect pitch of any bassist I ever played with. I had only to suggest a slightly altered inner voice in a chord and Palle would pivot off it to modulate to a different key & before long we’d be playing in remote keys from where we started, uncanny! It used to bother him like crazy when pianos would be even slightly out of tune on our gigs, to the point where I would carry a tuning wrench on the road to adjust any offending bad notes. He will be sorely missed!
Indeed! These recordings with this trio of yours are also definitive my favorite in the ECM catalog! My condolences ❤ Thank you very much for sharing this video! 🌞🙏
Beautiful music, thanks por sharing
This is great stuff. I have so many ECM albums the Rainbow studio seems to be a magical place to me. I have a friend who did his music degree and his dissertation was on the effect the studio had on a musician. He got to interview Jan Eric for his work. This was a good few years ago, I wonder if my friend still has his work on this. Thanks Peter, great to see this!
This is SO burning, wow! Ty for sharing, Peter
thank you Peter, in this music I find myself
Pete! This is SOooooo wonderful! What a beautiful document of a superb trio recording - one of my favorites from your catalog. It's so hard to imagine that both John and Palle are now gone. Such great, great players!!! BIG LOVE, Steve

Mucho thanks, Peter!
thanks for sharing this document to a jewel of a record!
Such beautiful, timeless music. Gorgeous compositions, exquisitely played. I love those trio albums. Thanks for sharing this footage, Peter.
RIP Palle and John. Thank you Peter Erskine for sharing this with us, such beautiful music.
Grazie Peter, per questo momento scolpito nel tempo. Per me vederti, sentirti suonare è sempre un motivo di grande gioia. ❤
Thanks for sharing Peter. Just wonderful. What a trio ❤. Paul 😊
Wow, Peter! Thanks so much for sharing this!!!! I love this album so much
This footage is great on so many levels, thank you for sharing dear Peter !
Thanks for uploading this video extract ❤.
Nice work Peter really like all you do
I've been waiting for this recording or one like it to surface since the mid 80s. Thank you.
Excellent ! Marvellous!
Mintzer’s thick voicings and harmonies never sounded better. Becker!!! And Lew!!!
gorgeous playing, and such a cool sound. thanks for sharing this
what great piano comping!!!
wonderful, more please!
You Never Know is one of the greatest ECM piano trio albums! Thank you for showing us what was going on behind the scenes. "Clapperclowe" is especially fun.
Oh yeah, the double hidden drummer! Hidden behind the band colleagues and behind the drum set. Even more with high angled cymbals back then. Well, most drummers later put their cymbals very low when changed to much more traditional playing. Not me, cause I still like the feel much more with higher angled cymbals. Makes you play differently. Also never seen Will with his original brown hair colour. Fantastic and rare video gem. Thanks Sir Peter.
The higher , the better Feel and Projection!! Completely different thing! Each musician in this band where right out there , on the Edge! They were All going for it! Never to be seen or heard again , live!
Fantastic!! Awesome band, great arrangement. Thanks for posting.
Sounds so warm love it!
